Hello,
I am considering to buy this great plugin, but I could not find a step-by step tutorial on how would I use DOF PRO in an animation.

I saw the gallery, and it appears to be well within the plugin capabilities, but no tutorial.

My questions are:

1. given a video rendered to sequence (jpg or tiff), and given a depth map also rendered in sequence (like a fog effect pass of the same animation), how do I animate a DOF effect on the entire sequence? Is it built in the plugin, with no need for Photoshop action?

2. can I animate the depth map within DOF? like, a sweep background / foreground focus, or the only way is to animate the depth map in AE (like animating the levels), save as a sequence (BMP), and then feed it to DOF PRO?

3. is this plugin compatible with V-ray Z-depth g-buffer? If yes, what format do I save the z-depth pass?

4. I read that we should not use motion blurred videos/renderings, because any post DOF will make artifacts, but the car gallery samples show the cars motion blurred (and so is the depth map).

Thank you

regards

Hi giovanni;

Nice to see you participating here. Let me try to answer your questions:

1. Yes, it's fully built into the plugin, no need for Photoshop actions. You basically select the first frame of the RGB, the first of the depth, and the output filename, then just click "Execute" and watch it go. (You can also set the start and end frames you wish processed).

2. To animate the DOF, you can do 2 things. The first is to wait until our next release which supports FULL keyframe animation for any and all controllers, including the focal point. This should be available soon and will most likely be a free upgrade for v2.0 users. The second is to do it with the depth maps, as you pointed out, by adjusting the levels. Not as intuitive, but will provide the same result. (Check out the chess sweep in the DOF PRO animation gallery for an example of this.)

3. I've tried using the VRay Z-Depth to output a Z-Depth map but I could only get it to output it using the RLA or RPF file formats which few apps support. Since I use VRay all the time, I use the fog feature instead and output BMPs.

4. ha ha - that's correct. The car example does show motion blur and so do the depth maps - but you are also correct in saying that it is incorrect. Although you CAN use motion blurred footage with DOF PRO (as this car example shows), it is not recommended because the output will not be correct. In specific, the motion blurred areas of the object will receive more DOF than the non-motion blurred areas. Because the motion blur is subtle on the cars, and so is the DOF, and there is fast motion, it is difficult to see any artefacting. But it is not physically correct.

Hope this helps and we hope to see you become part of our rapidly growing list of users!

Thank you, Richard,
for the quick and comprehensive answers!

If animatable keyframe within the DOF PRO parameter is in the way, I think we got a winner!

Last question: I read the license is locked to the computer where you authorize the software. What happens when I upgrade my workstation?

Thank you again,

regards
