 Forget BMP

Well I dunno if the BMP is the easiest way to go for the coding but it's not something we use. I'd rather prefer something like TGA, JPG.

Actually I need to generate a BMP file especially for Dofpro.

My second wish would be to see a plugin for after effect, conbustion, etc...

Hi!

Thank you for your contributions.

Regarding alternative image formats: We chose BMP as a widely used lossless standard. JPEG is of course popular in photography but it uses lossy compression, therefore we thought it would not be suited for CG and professional applications. We are currently exploring the feasibility to implement TIFF support with the perspective to move to 16 bits per channel.

Regarding a possible implementation for After Effects please refer to my post in the Problems Forum http://www.richardrosenman.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=17.

Greetings

Martin

First, I just purchased DOF Pro 2 and I will say this is an excellent plugin! Thanks!

My previous workflow in trueSpace involved rendering a TGA sequence of the color plate, along with a TGA sequence of the depth-maps. This would be brought into AfterEffects with the color map on two layers. One normal and one blurred based on the depth-map sequence.

Anyhow, with DOF Pro I now get bokeh and realistic DOF that looks SO MUCH better.

The reason I'm posting here is to request the added feature to DOF Pro of reading TGA files. Unlike BMP, where every pixel is recorded to file, TGA is lossless but can still use RLE so that the file sizes can be manageable.

I'm rendering master frames of 1920x1080 and that makes for one big bitmap.

Other than that, the plugin is SUPER. I'm currently promoting it over at Caligari's web forum.

Hi Frank;

Thanks for your input and kind compliments!

We are working on adding additional file format support as we speak (among other features) and hopefully we should have a working solution sooner rather than later. Wink

hi,
since I just added softimage xsi beside my 3ds max it would be great to have .exr, .tiff or .map support (8 bit, 16 bit or floating) to use finer zdepth imagery.

i do not know if that is possible but thought i write it down here Wink

greets,
daniel

Hi Daniel,

thanks for your post. Yep, DOF PRO V3.0 will add tiff support for both depth map and image files. Cool

We might implement 16 bit in future, however for depth maps I think that 8 bit should not be an issue at all.

Greetings
Martin

Hi Daniel, Frank, and others,

you may have realized that DOF PRO v3.0 has been released with support for gif, jpg, png, tif and tga in addition to bmp. Thanks for insisting on this, now everybody who wants to "Forget BMP" is free to do so. Very Happy

Greetings
Martin

Hello,

I've just bought DOF PRO 3.0 and gave a try on a 1600 frame sequence i had in stock Smile

The main problem is that the sequence is in PNG, and even if DOF PRO handle png, it seems that for the calculation of each frame, it converts it in a temp BMP for the precessing, which is quite time consuming.

Is it possible that I may achieve a better result in converting all my raw files (images and z depth) in BMP before loading them into the plugin ? (havn't tried yet)

Thanks anyway for this excellent plugin, i'll post the result in the appropriate part of the forum when done Smile

Hi Pixelab,

thank you for your encouraging words. It is true that DOF PRO creates a temp BPM of each frame but this should not significantly slow down the overall processing. You can of course bulk convert your sequence before throwing it at DOF PRO if you don't mind the extra step. The output format is the same as the input format - BMP in this case - so you would have to convert the result back to PNG again if that is your preferred format.

I guess you do not want to do this unless you really experience problems with DOF PRO handling PNG. Others have occasionally reported difficulties with large non-BMP sequences, we are currently looking into this.

Greetings
Martin
