The tutorial in the forum is incomplete and I can't find anywhere in the 3ds max documentation how to generate a depth map from a photo?

The scanline renderer renders the 3d objects in the workspace. How do you import a photo to generate the depth map?

It says on this website it must be done manually for photos:

Hi John;

Depth maps for photos can only be created manually, or by using DOF PRO's built-in gradient functions. You can generate a depth map from 3dsmax but only for a 3d scene because you can extract accurate 3d camera info. Since a photo is 2D, the depth map info must be created by the user.

Check out this thread - it will help: http://www.dofpro.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=150

Also, creating a manual depth map is not that difficult, depending on your image. Usually using the selection mask and selecting various shapes, then coloring them shades of grey according to their distance from the camera does the job.

Also check out the DOF PRO photography samples on the homepage as they show the original image, the depth map, and the result.
